Turn a power into a character

A superpower is one of the fastest ways to spark a character design. Roll a power, then let it answer the hard questions for you: what does this person look like, how do they move, what glows or crackles around them, and what would they never leave home without? Pick a rarity to set the scale — a common power suits a grounded, everyday hero, while legendary points to something cosmic and strange.

Flip on the twist toggle for a limitation. This is where characters get good. "Can fly, but only at night" instantly suggests a nocturnal design, tired eyes, a lantern. Constraints give you body language, costume logic and story, all from one line.

Character design tips

• Design around the limitation. The twist often shapes the character more than the power. Draw the workaround — the tools, the scars, the gadget they built to cope.
• Show the power in the pose. Don't just label it. A gravity-controller might stand with debris hovering; a plant-whisperer might have vines curling up an arm.
• Pick a signature effect. Give the power one visual motif — a colour, a shape, a particle — and repeat it in the costume so the design reads as a whole.
• Match silhouette to tier. Common powers suit simple, readable silhouettes; legendary powers can carry wild, dramatic shapes and flowing forms.
• Think about the cost. What does using the power do to the body? Glowing veins, frost on the skin, exhaustion — visible cost makes a character feel real.
• Draw them off-duty too. Sketch the hero doing something ordinary with their power. Those quiet moments reveal personality faster than an action pose.
